The English Lake District – an Introduction
Man has lived in these fells for over 500 years. Stone-Age tribes cleared the woodlands and made axes from the abundant stone. Later, Iron Age settlers built Hill Forts and the Romans built a chain of settlements and a network of roads which crossed the high fells.
The Viking invaders left their ancient crosses and language. Then the Normans divided the land between the barons and churches, which saw the beginning of the Wool industry, this remained the area’s largest industry up until the 19th century.
In the late 19th and early 19th centuries, poets and artists discovered this landscape. As their numbers increased, so did the number of tourists who came on the newly opened railway to enjoy the beauty of Lakeland.
The Lake District is England’s only real mountain area, and is said to be the most enchanting corner of the UK. Although being remarkably compact, it is also very varied. Away from the museums and galleries of the small market towns there is an abundance of leisure activities; climbing, walking, pony trekking, fishing and water sports.
The scenery is majestic and spectacular, peaceful and forever changing in mood and tempo. To discover the true lakes you must travel beyond the photograph or painting and experience the living landscape.
Forget the troubles of the city and enter the world of the Fell Walker. Tread a rocky path, get buffeted by wind and rain and dip into a clear mountain pool. The fresh air and exercise will give you a hearty appetite, which can be catered for in one of the many hotels, pubs, inns and restaurants.
