She Was Walking Her Dog When …
he stepped out from behind the bushes.
Every parent’s mind turns cold at the thought!
We read about it, we worry about it, we almost don’t believe it.
The old, old story, alas. But it happens! It still happens!
Is there anything we can do to prevent it?
Forget about rape alarms. It can all happen so quickly and so often in secluded places, away from witnesses or help. An alarm won’t stop him – indeed it may make him hurry up to get ‘it’ finished!
There are several things to do.
1 Cultivate all-round awareness. Be like the wild deer and keep your wits about you. They have to. But these days we tend to stroll around not noticing what’s happening about us. Times have changed, we must change. We must give thought to personal protection. No one else will!
Because of this, notice anything unusual. ‘Don’t talk to strangers’ – oh, were it so simple! But it is still true, nevertheless. Basic stuff, yes, but it can keep the skin around one’s throat clear with no bruises!
2 Recognise danger signs. They are always there. Usually in a set of stages.
First of all, your natural, subconscious ’sixth sense’ of impending danger. If you get ‘bad vibes’ that something is wrong, then something IS wrong. Take avoiding action, and nothing is lost. Don’t take avoiding action, and you may never get a second chance.
A stranger may – indeed, will – look friendly and pleasant. He may be But equally he may be masking his real intentions. Just one factor but one to bear in mind. He may be trying to deceive and throw you off guard. Don’t go by his words – go by his actions. Trust your ‘vibes’.
Assess your situation. Are you badly placed? Is help nearby? Not that you can ever expect help – why should a total stranger rush to help you and get his throat cut for his trouble? It doesn’t make sense. Robbery can take only a few seconds – a quick snatching rush in, a punch to your face, and your purse is gone. Rape is different. Rape takes time. Rape needs location, either the park, a car or sometimes just the next room.
Could the stranger physically attack you? Is it likely that he would succeed? Does he look tough, rough or strong? This of course is very hard to judge, but if he clearly looks capable, this is a factor to bear in mind as an alarm sign.
Does he look determined to attack? Does he give off warning signs that his mind has tipped and that come what may, he is hell bent on carrying out his intentions? You must assess this soonest, before it is too late.
When you see him approaching, move well to one side, out of his line of travel, and call out “Please don’t come any closer!” If now he changes direction towards you, he is about to attack. He is heading into your Personal Space. Why should he move towards you? Robbery? Murder? Rape? Almost certainly!
3 It is now that you draw your weapon. Yes, weapon. In my opinion, if you are potential victim – young, pretty, female, alone – you MUST have an effective weapon with you. Immediately to hand, not in the depths of your handbag.
Legally you must not carry a weapon. The Law says so. You are encouraged to run away. But an offensive weapon, No! Do you think the lawyers will pour water on the flowers over your grave as they argue about this?
In the old Japanese ’samurai days’, the rank and file were forbidden to carry weapons. Just as we may not today. Swords, knives were severely prohibited. So what did they do? They developed whole fighting systems (kobudo) built around their everyday farming and working tools. They even used the oars (eku) of their boats to most effectively demolish attackers.
So?
If you are walking your dog, you have two major weapons already to hand: his lead and his favourite dog chew. There is as powerful martial art using a chain – manrikigusari-jutsu. The lead can be effectively adapted to suit. As did the old Okinawan peasants. It makes a good, practical fighting chain.
His six-inch long hard stiff rawhide chew. You know, the one that he really loves to fetch when you throw it for him … And which you just happen to have with you when you come under threat of rape! And which no lawyer can deny you.
The hard chew equates to a Yawara-jutsu fighting stick around which there is a whole martial art of extreme effectiveness. Tucked out of sight behind your buttock, it can plunge into an attacker’s eye or throat causing him considerable problems. And without any risk of him later on trying to sue you for carrying an ‘illegal weapon’.
